ADI Part 3 Instructional Ability Test – what is involved

The object of this test is to assess the quality of your client-centred driving lesson.

The test lasts about an hour. During the test a specially trained  DVSA senior examiner will observe you giving a driving lesson to either a full licence holder or a learner driver – the choice of who you bring to the test is yours. The person cannot be another driving instructor or someone who is training you to be a driving instructor.

Surepass will provide you a study pack for you to learn at home, which includes a DVD and a workbook. We will also provide you with 6 days in-car tuition from an expert Surepass tutor, who will ensure that you are ready to take your test and become an Approved Driving Instructor.

The examiner will look for evidence you have been able to demonstrate a high-standard of client -centred learning and will mark you in 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories.

  • lesson planning
  • risk management
  • teaching and learning strategies

The ADI part 3 marking sheet can be found by following this link

The examiner will look for evidence that the lesson you are demonstrating meets the national standard for driver and rider training,

How you will be marked

You will be expected to maintain control of the lesson, be patient and tactful and give encouragement to the ‘pupil’ at all times. What is assessed is the relevance of the instruction for the ability of the pupil and to the particular conditions on the road on the day of the test.

You will receive a score from 0 to 3 for each of the 17 competencies which are added up at the end of the test to determine whether you have scored enough to qualify. The final score is known as your grade. The examiner will also discuss the result with you at the end of the test.

Total score

0-30: An unsatisfactory performance. Grade – Fail

31-42 A satisfactory performance, congratulations you have qualified as an Approved Driving Instructor Grade – B

43-51: Congratulations, you have achieved a high standard of instruction, you have qualified as an Approved Driving Instructor Grade – A

Scores of less than 7 in the Risk Management category are an automatic fail. If the examiner has to stop the lesson because you have put yourself or someone else in danger is also an automatic fail
